Religion would be more inclined to support independent artists because of what they represent, they are not making music with the intention of major profits (if any) from their music. Their independency allows them to avoid the upper management aspects of the industry and focus on their passion. When most people think of rappers, specifically rappers of colour, they automatically associate aggression and anger - however Chance is a rapper of colour and raps about God. Atheists can sometimes be critical of religion and assume stereotypes, similar to that of false assumptions of rap. However, people tend to be more lenient towards religion in comparison to rap because they believe religion is somehow better or above rap - although neither is 'better' than the other.Police brutality and racial injustices are significantly more common in struggling communities such as Chicago, in these hardships many take to religion to help get them through it, while others take to rap to voice their oppression. Chance as many other individuals with a strong faith believe music brings them closer to God.
